The two ads that got my attention during Super Bowl LIX were the Harrison Ford Jeep commercial and Jesus Gets Us. I grabbed my phone to look up information about both. The Ford advert (pardon me…..) The Jeep advert made me curious if they filmed it on Harrison’s Jackson, Montana ranch. I came up dry for an answer. All I could find was variations on the theme of “Why did Harrison Ford do it?”.
I grabbed my phone during The Jesus Gets Us ad to see what organization was behind this, what they believe, and subsequently what their agenda is. I feel protective about stuff like this.
There are jillions of Christians or wannabe Christians that are being duped by unscrupulous wolves today. Some of the most dangerous ones are based in progressive thinking and craft their speech in a way that reminds me of the serpent in The Garden–mixing truth with subtle lies to lead the naive astray. Their words sound good, but they’re not based in whole truth. Let’s break it down.
Who are they? Jesus Gets Us is a non-committal non-profit that is now fully managed by Come Near. It has had some sort of affiliation with The Bible Project, an organization that creates free Bible-based video and teaching content. Come Near has a circular website that doesn’t lead you anywhere except chasing your tail. Their FAQ page has no answers.
The Jesus Gets Us organization wants folks to get together and talk about Jesus’ story.
What IS Jesus’ story? You can’t truly “talk about” Jesus’ story without talking about committal–something that they aren’t willing to be. Jesus tells us in John 3:3:
. . . “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
(John 3:3)
That’s committal. It’s decision time. You’re either in or you’re out. Simply talking about Him doesn’t save a soul.
For this reason I take issue with The Bible Project as well for their non-committal, don’t-offend-anyone-approach as well. This is what happens when you want to broaden your reach.
The Gospel of Jesus Christ was created for all mankind but it is polarizing at the same time. Speaking the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth IS love. Some will say “yes”. Most will say “no”. We do a disservice to everyone by softening it.
Jesus is not a namby pamby. He is a straight shooter. We should be too.
